FAQs
Q: What is Core Angling?
A: We get this question a lot. Core refers to our inner strengths. It's where we get our motivation, passion, ideals and perseverance from. It defines who we are both outwardly and inwardly. When we connect with our core (beliefs) we unleash that inner child along with a renewed sense of wonder. Some seek to reconnect in order to find balance in an ever-changing world. Some reconnect to give back and leave a legacy. This is our definition of Core Angling. How do you tap into your Core?
"Many are the wise men and masters who have lived on water since the distant past. Among those who live on the water, there are some who fish for fish, there are some who fish for men, and there are those who fish for the Way. Since ancient times, this has all been part of the way of living on water. There are still those who fish for Self, those who fish for food, those who are fished for food and those who are fished by the Way" - Dogen Zenji.
Q: How many scientists will I be interacting with?
A: Depending on the location, the diversity of the field sites, and the research needed, you can expect to work with between one and three scientists, including ‘fish doctors’, graduate students and research associates.
Q: Will I participate in fisheries research every day of my trip?
A: Yes, any day on the water includes some sort of field research. Even basic field observations are important for understanding fish and their habitats.
Q: Are fish purposely killed during our research angling experience?
A: No, they’re not. Most of our research is based on the effects of catch-and-release. Which means any mortality is generally linked to natural interactions between fish that are released and their predators. In some cases we may retrieve fish that have been preyed upon so we can obtain additional data.
Q: Do I need to be an expert angler to participate in research?
A: It has been said that fly casting takes an hour to learn and a lifetime to master! While some proficiency in angling is necessary, to catch a good number of fish, Core Angling experiences are not solely reserved for people who can make 50 foot casts into the wind.
If you need to work on improving your casting prior to your trip we can recommend some useful resources that can help.
Q: Do I need to be able to fly fish or can spinning gear also be used?
A: Much of the research we conduct examines the effects of different types of angling techniques; so we are happy to work with fly fishers and also anglers who wish to use conventional fishing gear.
Q: Do I need to provide all my own fishing equipment?
A: Yes, please bring your own fishing equipment and gear with you. Prior to your Core Angling experience we’ll send you an equipment and packing list so you’ll know exactly what to bring. However, we do carry spare rods, reels and tackle on all our trips just in case.
Q: How will I be able to apply what I’ve experienced in one of your programs?
A: Core Angling includes a one year membership in an angling organization that best fits the type of program you have chosen. This allows you to interact with like-minded individuals and stay in tune with the science and application of angling best practices with regard to your favorite species. Your support and involvement in these organizations help further important research and connects you with others that are as passionate about fishing as you are.
Q: How fit do I need to be in order to participate in research-based angling?
A: We’ll work with you to develop an experience that matches your fitness level. Much of our field work is done by wading in shallow waters. However, this work can also be done from the deck of a skiff too. Please let us know of any pre-existing medical conditions before booking your Core Angling experience.
Q: What happens if my trip is interrupted by bad weather or a hurricane?
A: We pay close attention to weather forecasts and satellite imagery and plan each day with the weather in mind. And we have different sites with varying exposures. So, even if you can’t fish for bonefish, chances are you’ll get some fishing in - whatever the weather.
However, your safety is paramount. So if there’s an impending hurricane, we reserve the right to postpone and reschedule your trip*. Although, any costs incurred for flights would have to be claimed through your own travel insurance company.
Q: Do I need to have trip cancellation insurance?
A: Yes, we recommend this type of insurance to all our guests, as it covers items that are outside of the Core Angling program (see above).
Q: Do I need to have medical insurance?
A: Yes. Although Core Angling does include emergency evacuation and repatriation insurance through the Divers Alert Network. Please provide us with your personal information (full name and middle initial, address, phone number, email and date-of-birth) and we will be pleased to take care of the rest. Your one year DAN membership number and information will be mailed directly to you. Just bring these along with you on the trip, it’s that simple!
24-Hour DAN TravelAssist
"As a DAN Member, you automatically receive DAN TravelAssist and up to $100,000 of evacuation assistance coverage. Effective for both diving and non-diving injuries, this benefit is provided by MedAire, a world leader in emergency evacuation services. Your evacuation coverage begins when you are traveling at least 50 miles/80 km from home and call DAN TravelAssist to arrange your evacuation."
Q: Will I have access to the phone or internet?
A: Although your condo accommodation will have internet access, many of our field sites are remote and communication to the outside world is limited (except in the case of medical emergencies). So if you’re hoping to check your email on the hour or make frequent phone calls during your research angling trip, you might want to think about a more typical angling vacation rather than a Core Angling experience.
Q: How is tipping handled at Core Angling?
A: We do not accept tips as part of our program but, if you wish, a donation can be made to the Cape Eleuthera Institute on behalf of The Flats Ecology and Conservation Program. This would be most appreciated, as it funds bonefish research directly. CEI is a not-for-profit 501-C 3, all donations are tax deductible (please check with your accountant for applicability).
*Please contact us for limitations.
